Dr. David Weintritt is a board certified breast surgeon and founder of the National Breast Center. Dr. Weintritt completed his college and medical education at the University of Florida. After graduation, he served as a general surgeon in the Air Force at Andrews Air Force Base. During his tenure as an Air Force surgeon, he was able to work with Bethesda Naval Hospital in offering sentinel node biopsy, a procedure now standard in breast cancer surgery. From there, he entered into private practice in Annapolis, MD where he worked in the hospital’s new breast center; gaining experience in breast ultrasound and minimally invasive approaches for breast disease management. In 2003, Dr. Weintritt opened his own practice in Alexandria, VA. He started a program for sentinel node biopsy and was the first to bring partial breast radiation to the area. In 2010, Dr. Weintritt was named a director of the INOVA Mount Vernon Breast Care Institute. He is consistently the highest volume breast cancer surgeon in the INOVA system. In 2012 Dr. Weintritt founded the National Breast Center to continue raising awareness of new treatment options and to expand services available for breast cancer patients. In 2014 Dr. Weintritt founded the National Breast Center Foundation with the goal of improving access to care, technology for breast cancer screening and treatment, and giving women in the Washington Metropolitan Area the options they deserve.
Message from Dr. Weintritt to Patients:
While I can’t place myself in your shoes, I see the impact cancer can have by working every day to help patients educate our community. Years ago I began focusing on breast cancer and have dedicated my practice to providing the most comprehensive care available. Every patient is unique and deserves a plan tailored to them. Getting opinions from a large number of specialists means nothing unless you have a team that adapts their skills to YOUR needs.
There are 2 times when I really have the chance to make a difference. The first is in the initial phase of diagnosis – the earlier the better and the challenge is for us is to continue improving the screening process. We are one of a very small number of breast clinics in the country that offer ultrasound screening for breast cancer. The second is during surgery where my goal is to combine the least invasive with the most therapeutic approach – removing the cancer but not a woman’s sense of well-being.
I also strongly recommend finding and using support. Whether it’ s family, friends, a church group, or a breast cancer support group, it will help immensely to find someone who will be there for you. Support networks such as our Life with Cancer program are just a call away. Treating breast cancer is a marathon, not a sprint. There will often be many specialists involved, tests to have done, and the variety of treatment options can be daunting. The journey starts with education and continues with our dedication to pursue new technology and treatments to make sure we offer only the best.
